Response to Hydrolysed Collagen Protein Supplementation in a Cohort of Pregnant and Postpartum Women

Postpartum Women
There is overwhelming evidence that links maternal nutrition during pregnancy with fetal outcomes. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of Protiva treatment responses in pre and postpartum female subjects between the ages of 19 years and 43 years who entered into this open label study.

The protocol was designed to take a twice daily collagen protein supplementation drink during the third trimester and for 10 weeks postpartum.

The outcomes were measured against a control group of patients who did not take the protein supplementation. The differences between mean score for the physical health domain of WHOQOL-BREF scale in the Protiva group and the control group were different and met statistical significance (p=0.0003).

Otocephaly:Agnathia Microstomia Synotia Syndrome-A Case Report

Otocephaly is characterized by aplasia or hypoplasia of mandible, a small oral fissure and low lying ears at the level of neck usually meeting in the midline.

Otocephaly
This is due to the failure of migration of the ventral part of the first brachial arch. This rare lethal non familial condition occurs in 1 in 70,000 births.

This is the first reported case of otocephaly in Sri Lanka as per our best knowledge, a baby girl born to non-consanguineous parents, who was unable to survive a long time after birth. This case is being reported because of its rarity.

Role of Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 2 in Pancreatic Cancer: Potential Target for New Therapeutic Approach?

Fibroblast growth factors and their receptors play a key role in cell proliferation, migration and differentiation. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) is involved in carcinogenesis and its altered expression has been shown in several tumors, such as breast, thyroid and pancreatic cancer.

The two isoforms of FGFR2 gene, FGFR2-IIIb (also known as KGFR) and FGFR2-IIIc have been shown to exert differential roles in pancreatic cancer.
Fibroblast Growth Factor

This review focuses on the role of FGFR2 signaling in pancreatic adenocarcinoma and the potential use of FGFR2 tissutal expression as a predictive and/or prognostic marker.

What do Semen Parameters Mean? How to Define a Normal Semen Analysis

Although abnormal semen parameters are generally considered to be poor predictors of fertility, Semen Analysis (SA) parameters are often used as a screening test to detect male factor infertility.
Semen Parameters

Certainly, men with azoospermia or severe oligozoospermia have markedly impaired fertility potential. Since men with abnormal fertility could undergo various medical or surgical treatments to improve semen parameters and fertility, it is clinically relevant to have a test for infertility.

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and American Urological Association guidelines, semen analysis and male reproductive history are considered the primary screening evaluation for male fertility potential.

Maternal Satisfaction with the Delivery Services in Assela Hospital, Arsi Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia,2013.

A woman’s satisfaction with the delivery service may have immediate and long term effects on her health and subsequent utilization of the services.
Maternal Satisfaction

Pentoxifylline Associated with Other Antioxidants (Multimodal Therapy) on Patients with Peyronie's Disease. Results of a Controlled Study

We carried out a controlled study on 240 patients diagnosed with Peyronie's Disease (PD). We have divided two treatment groups, which differ from each other only for the association with PTX-penile injection.

Peyronie's Disease
Two groups (A and B) were totally composed by 160 PD patients (80 patients for each group): Group A=PTX injection (penile and peri-lesional) 100 mg, every two weeks for six months + PTX 400 mg /oral/ twice daily + propolis 600 mg / oral / daily + blueberries 160 mg /oral/ daily + Vitamin E 600 mg / oral / daily + topical Diclofenac sodium 4% gel / twice a day, for a period of 6 months.

Group B=the same therapy of group A but without PTX penile injection. Patients who refused treatment, for various reasons, were included in the control group=Group C

Frozen Blastocyst Transfer Has Similar Success Rates in Asian and Caucasian Patients

With increasing evidence that ethnicity plays a role in health and treatment outcomes, the goal of this study was to evaluate the outcome of frozen blastocyst transfer in Asian compared to Caucasian women.
Frozen Blastocyst

In this same patient population, we previously found that fresh blastocyst transfer had a lower success rate in the Asian patients.

The current study then examined 72 patients who returned and underwent subsequent frozen blastocyst transfer, of which 42 (58.3%) self-identified as Caucasian and 30 (41.7%) as Asian.

Early, Mid, and Late-Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials During Pregnancy: Two Cases

There are various known hormone-related effects on audiometric thresholds and other auditory measures.
Auditory Evoked Potentials

However, research is scarce and mixed on the effect of pregnancy on the early-, mid-, and late-latency auditory evoked responses in a longitudinal fashion.

Of clinical importance is to know whether electrophysiologic measures during pregnancy may further alter the results of, or mask, an already existing auditory disorder, which could complicate interpretation.

Quality of the Reference of the Obstetric Emergencies to the Departmental Hospital Center of Borgou (CHD/B) at Parakou (Benin)

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 200 million women become pregnant each year worldwide. Of these, 287,000 die from complications of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.
Obstetric Emergencies

A significant portion of these deaths (99%) is recorded in developing countries. These deaths registered in developing countries, the Africa in the South of Sahara totals 50%.

In Benin, the maternal mortality ratio was estimated at 397 deaths for 100,000 live births in 2011. Maternal death is partly dependent on the level of socio-health organization. This organization is partly dependent on the system put in place to refer patients to referral centers where needed.

DSM-5 Changes in Diagnostic Criteria of Sexual Dysfunctions

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria proved to be in a constant of evolution.

Ovarian Heterotopic Pregnancy after Ovulation Induction with Clomiphene Citrate

Heterotopic Pregnancy
An ovarian heterotopic pregnancy is a rare entity associated with life-threatening consequences in case of delayed diagnosis. Case: A 33-year-old nulliparous woman with idiopathic primary infertility underwent a cycle of ovulation induction using Clomiphene Citrate and intrauterine insemination.

Although the patient was asymptomatic, the ultrasound demonstrated a missed abortion with a right ovarian heterotopic pregnancy. The patient underwent suction dilatation and curettage of the missed abortion and laparoscopic resection of the ovarian heterotopic pregnancy with preservation of the affected ovary.

Increased awareness of the risk of heterotopic pregnancies following fertility treatments can prevent fatal outcomes and allow for conservative treatments and preservation of fertility.

Prostate Specific Antigen

Biodata from request form were collated and analyzed. A total of 15079 requests were received for the period under review. There was a consistent and progressive yearly increase of request from inception to the last year of review but a sudden drop in 2010 only.

Smoked or barbecued food, consumption of local herb and alcohol in order of importance, respectively, appears to be prominent factor in patient requested for PSA.

Post-Partum Excessive Bleeding among Bangladeshi Women; Determinants, Perceptions, Recognition, Responses

The study assessed post-partum blood loss among women in two areas of Bangladesh and explored community perceptions, recognition, and response.
Post-Partum

A cross-sectional survey among 840 women was conducted in two sites to estimate excessive blood loss in the study population. In-depth interviews were conducted among a sub-sample of women (n=34), husbands (n=15), mothers-in-law (15), and Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) (11).

Two Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were held with TBAs and village health care providers. Among post-partum haemorrhage (PPH) cases, approximately 60% perceived blood loss as excessive.
